Peanut Gallery

Peanut Gallery is a Chrome Experiment that lets you add intertitles to old film clips using your voice, then share those clips with your friends. It uses your computer's microphone and the Web Speech API in Google Chrome to turn speech into text. The name “peanut gallery” was a nickname for the most rambunctious seats in the theater, where people would eat cheap peanuts and provide colorful commentary during the show. This could be used in class describing historical events or for creative writing.

To start, select a film clip - there are several to choose from as you scroll left and right at the bottom of the screen.

To start you just have to say something.....

As the film clip plays, you say the words aloud that you want as the intertitles. Students can watch the film once and speak later if they want.

There is no typing....this is all done for you with voice.

It was pretty tricky to get all of the correct words that we said within the intertitles. Here are a few tips on the "About" page of Peanut Gallery.

Once the silent film is complete, you can change the title by clicking on it.

When you are finished, you can share it several different ways.

Very easy to use, even for the younger crowd. Just remember to have your students speak clearly so each word is picked up.
