Google Forms and Add-Ons

Special thanks to Cassie Miller for helping with this page!

GoogleForms (which is already a part of our Google email suite) is a handy tool to use for quizzes for our students. With just a bit of extra effort beforehand, the quiz can even be made to "self-grade" with the click of a button.

A teacher could use this tool for pre-assessment or post-assessment or both. Since it has multiple formats (multiple choice, short text, paragraph text, check boxes, drop down...), it can be used in almost any area of instruction and ask almost any type of question. It easily enhances student learning because of how swiftly they can get their feedback. Not immediate, but swift. You can also have the system send an email to the student to share their grade with them.

I've used this tool several times. I've used it for vocabulary quizzes and also for voting/polls. Alice Keeler's Teacher Tech blog is a great resource for ways to use GoogleForms (and other GoogleDocs) in the classroom. Her entry on formative assessment is very clearly written. Do a quick Google search on Forms as quizzes and dozens of entries will pop up for you - possibly even some already created that you can use!

Google Forms are pretty simple to make and the add ons can make your life even easier. In June 2016, Google released Quizzes inside Google Forms, so you no longer need an add on to grade your quizzes/tests. I do like the feature, but the add-ons bring features that the form quizzes do not have. To learn how to make Google Forms and use the AddOns Flubaroo and/or SuperQuiz to grade and send feedback, check out my online course. It allows you to move through the training at your own pace while experiencing Canvas as a student; to see how you can use it as a teacher, go here. You can also check out my Google Slides or the Periodic Table of Apps, Extensions and Add-Ons I created.

If you would like to use these as a test, there are ways to do that as well. If you need to time them, you can use them inside Canvas or use FormLimter to open and close the form at a specific time.
