1341 Mandarin Chinese I

Grades 9-12: 1 Credit College Prep

Mandarin I is designed for beginning students to speak, read, and write Chinese at a basic level. Students will learn the Hanyu Pinyin Romanization system, simplified Chinese characters, radicals, word usages, sentence patterns, basic dialogues and short sentences for use in real life situations. The course begins with an overview of Chinese pronunciation, geography and history, and lays a foundation for a study of Chinese culture and history. Student performance will be assessed through the use of school-wide rubrics, common formative assessments, summative assessments, as well as task specific rubrics.


1351 Mandarin Chinese II

Grades 9-12: 1 Credit College Prep with Honors Option

Required Sequence: : Successful Completion of Mandarin Chinese I

Mandarin II develops and expands the fundamental language skills introduced in Chinese 1. Students will continue to build communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Chinese at the elementary level with an emphasis on consolidating their knowledge to pronunciation, grammar rules and sentence patterns. More aspects of Chinese history, geography and culture will be included and discussed. Student performance will be assessed through the use of school-wide rubrics, common formative assessments, summative assessments, as well as task specific rubrics.


1371 Mandarin Chinese III

Grades 10-12: 1 Credit College Prep with Honors Option

Required Sequence: Successful Completion of Mandarin Chinese II

Mandarin III is an intermediate level course in Modern Mandarin Chinese. Efforts will be dedicated toward developing fluency in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese. Further study of contemporary and traditional Chinese cultural elements will be explored. Student performance will be assessed through the use of school-wide rubrics, common formative assessments, summative assessments, as well as task specific rubrics.


1372 Mandarin Chinese IV

Grades 10-12: 1 Credit Honors

Required Sequence: Successful completion of Mandarin Chinese III

Mandarin IV is designed to be a continuation of Chinese III. Students will extend their ability to communicate effectively and properly in various real-life situations, learn more complex grammatical structures, and increase vocabulary using a significant number of characters. Chinese culture will be discussed in greater depth. Student performance will be assessed through the use of school-wide rubrics, common formative assessments, summative assessments, as well as task specific rubrics.
