Anyone who thinks, "kids today don't read," has not been spending time at Spruce Mountain Middle School! The students here read avidly, both for class and for pleasure. Here are a few of our new fiction titles. We know they will be popular favorites very soon!

The Courage Test by James Preller

William Meriwether Miller was named after famed explorers Lewis and Clark. He's not a fan of exploration, outdoors, or adventure, but his dad is. In fact, his dad wants to take William to retrace the route of Lewis and Clark across the country.

William and his dad don't get along well since his parents' divorce. This would be a challenging trip for two people who both liked outdoor adventure and got along great; for these two it is sure to be a true challenge.

Last Man Out by Mike Lupica

If there was a king of middle school sports fiction, it would be Mike Lupica. Every book he writes is gripping and entertaining for sports lovers and anyone who loves a good story. This book is no exception!

Tommy is a monster back on his school's football team. He's tough, fierce, and brave, just like his dad. His dad is a firefighter who strives to be the first in and the last out of any fire. One day, his dad's bravery goes a step too far. He races to the fire in the fire truck and away from it in an ambulance. Set in New England, this is a story that could happen to anyone with a love of the game and an equally great love of their family.

Big Fat Notebook series

The library has purchased a few books in the new Big Fat Notebook series. As they explain on the cover, the books are like getting the notes from the smartest kid in class, double checked by the teacher. Layouts are bright and engaging. The fonts look like handwriting, there are plenty of drawn illustrations, and the text is easy to understand.

Here is a sample page. We have purchased some of the series but not all. If you like them and want more, let Mrs Lemire know!

Thanks to our fall Scholastic Book Fair, the library was able to buy lots of great new books! Here are two of our new favorites:
