Yesterday, the entire library department attended the Maine Reading Roundup conference. One of our best takeaways was this list of high interest/low reading level resources from the librarians of the Portland Public Schools. They use them with their ELL population, but they could be used with any student who struggles or is less interested in reading. Here is their list, as well as information on where to find these books in our district:

Bluford High series RL grades 3-5

many available @SMHS and a few @SMMS library, plus audiobooks available FREE here

Border Town series Lexile 600-650 a few available @SMMS library

Orca Currents / Soundings / Limelights RL grades 2-5 many available @SMHS and a few @SMMS library

Jake Maddox (sports) RL grades 2-3 one available @SMES and one @SMPS library

Carter High Chronicles RL grade 2, Lexile 240-310, interest level grades 9-12 none currently available

Choices RL grade 1-2, Lexile 290-340, interest level grades 5-12 none currently available

District 13 RL grades 1-2, Lexile 60-240, interest level grades 9-12 none currently available

Dark Man RL grade 1-2, interest level grades 5-12 none currently available

Also consider novels in verse, novels paired with audiobooks, and graphic novels. All Spruce Mountain School Libraries have a wide variety of these available to you. Please speak with your librarians to learn more.
