Lesson Highlight: The Book of Mistakes

At Spruce Mountain Primary School this week, we've been reading The Book of Mistakes by Corinna Luyken and talking about using our imaginations to turn "mistakes" in art into opportunities for creativity. We love how this book encourages a growth mindset. Our students love the detail in the pictures and had fun trying to guess what was going to be added to the drawing next. We all agreed that if we make a mistake in our art, instead of getting frustrated and throwing it out, we could try and turn it into something awesome.

Then, we tried to turn a mistake into something awesome on our own. Each student was given the same scribble on a piece of paper. Without talking, students were asked to turn the scribble into whatever it looked like to them.

Here are just a few of our favorite results from our Grade 1 students:

Mermaid

Rooster

Girl with long hair

Interested in trying this activity? Any scribble will work! It's lots of fun!
