Recycling Project

Freeport High School received a grant this spring from Ecomaine to help launch a formalized, single sort, recycling program.  Senior Shelby Sawyer, president of the Earth Club, initiated the project idea, wrote the grant proposal, and was awarded funds to get single sort bins in the classrooms, recycling transport containers, compost containers, and a composter.  The intention is to recycle as much as possible and start a formal composting system in the cafeteria.

Students in the Earth Club, AP Environmental Science Class, Focus 9,  Public Speaking Class students, and JMG worked collaboratively to get the initiative started.   Teams visited every Advisory to introduce the program to the students and staff.  Signage was made  and groups rotate  weekly to collect the recycling.  and get it to the loading dock. where  maintenance picks up and delivers to the Silver Bullet in town. To further streamline the program, Freshmen Yacob Olins, Earth Club member, co-authored an LL Bean Aspirations grant and was awarded  funding to get a 4-cubic yard container for recycling to be housed on school property.  Troiano, RSU5's trash hauler will take the recycling directly to Ecomaine.

Students in the Public Speaking class created a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to be shared with the school community at the beginning of the year and for incoming Freshmen in subsequent years.  Students will collect data and record their findings with the goal of FHS  eventually recycling enough that we can eliminate one of our current 4 cubic-yard  trash containers which will defer the cost of the recycling container.  Updated reports will be shared with Freeport High School community.

In addition to the single sort recycling, students set up a CLYNK account for returnables.  All proceeds will go directly to Freeport High School.
