Students in Lisa Blier's Applied Communication class created and designed a Healthy Relationships, bullying prevention, presentation and partnered with 4th grade students in Mrs. Boucher's class at Mast Landing School. In preparation for this the HS students first identified bullying, language, and actions associated with it. Next they researched on the web, watched videos, and read news articles. Some shared personal stories of a time when they experienced bullying. Lastly they brainstormed and came up with a plan for their presentation and decided to make their focus on healthy relationships and healthy environments instead of bullying which has become a worn out term. Their goal was to be effective in getting their message across to the 4th graders about respecting and celebrating differences, being tolerant, speaking up and being supportive. On May 3 the students traveled to MLS school to present their skit, their teachings, and their song to the 4th graders. Afterwards they spent time sharing stories with the students and took questions. This presentation had a huge impact on the 4th graders who in turn created their own presentation for the MLS community in an assembly, using much of the material from the FHS students.
