On May 17th, FHS hosted El Fadel Arbab, a Darfur refugee and genocide survivor, to come speak to our students and staff. After his presentation he joined Charlie Mellon's Freshmen Global Studies Class who were studying Africa. Students were so inspired by his story and teachings that they went from passive audience members to activists. They decided to hold a benefit/awareness event , Dine For Darfur, for El Fadel's organization, Fur Cultural Revival, in Portland, whose mission is to raise awareness about the genocide, support Darfur refugees living in Portland, and keep the Fur Tribe culture alive. Students teamed up with local professional chef, Lindsay Sterling from Immigrant Kitchens, to plan an authentic Sudanese meal at Freeport Community Services. Together they secured food donations from several local businesses, cooked the meal, created art and presentations for the event, played music, decorated and set the tables, served 95 guests, cleaned up, and raised $1,000! Student presentations were powerful, each filled with poise, knowledge, and passion. It was an awe-inspiring event!
