WEEK 8 & 9
WALT: - Write a story from a character
TASK
This week you are going to create a character then write a story that involves your main character.
Instructions
1 - Create a Doc and plan your character - male/female? physical features? character traits? etc.
2 - Using Avachara create a visual representation of your character.
3 - Take a screen shot of your character and import it into your Doc.
4 - Start writing your story - include a title, descriptive language and dialogue.
WEEK 6- 7
WALT: Compose a letter using vocabulary to add effect.
You are writing letters to people in Canterbury who were affected by the earthquake that recently hit.
Your letter is going to be a letter of help and thoughts for someone who lives down in the Canterbury region.
In you letter you are trying to be as supportive as possible, cheer them up and let them know that they are in our thoughts.
This is a letter of support to cheer someone up and make them feel better.

WALT: - Identify features of instructional writing
- Create instructions that are concise and easy to follow
TASK
1 - Copy the instructional writing presentation (look to your right), file it.
2 - Work through presentation with your teacher.
3 - Copy the Rewriting Instructions doc (below), file it and turn it in.
4 - Complete the Rewriting Instructions activity.
TASK B
1. Think about a scientific experiment that you have conducted in the last couple of weeks.
2. Create either a Google Doc or presentation and create step by step instructions so that someone could recreate the experiment.
3. Add it to your blog with a paragraph explaining your learning.

1. Watch the following video about making an Origami Paper Ninja Star.
2. Create Google Presentation and create step by step instructions so that someone could make the star. Use pictures to show the steps as well as written instructions.

WEEKS 3
WALT: - Convert text passages into past tense
- Use vocabulary to enhance meaning and mood
As a writer it is really important you are aware of what tense you are writing in. It is also important that you remain within that tense so your writing flows well.
Most narratives are written in PAST TENSE. This means you are writing about something that HAS ALREADY HAPPENED. You need to make sure your writing, in particular your verbs (action words) are in PAST TENSE.
TASK
1 - COPY, FILE and TURN IN this Doc. The passages of text have been written in present tense. Your job is to re-write them in past tense.
2 - Use the picture below as a prompt. Write a story making sure you stay in
PAST TENSE throughout the entire story. Remember to use T.O.P.S and to make sure you paragraphs are effective (look to your right). FILE it & TURN IT IN.

Explanation writing involves informing your reader abut something e.g how something works or how something came to be. This week we are going to be writing about how the Olympic games first came to be.

As a way of sharing our experiences with one another we are going to create an article informing others about what we got up to in that last week. These articles will be collected and put together as a magazine or online magazine.

Punctuation and Grammar
Walt: Edit our writing looking at punctuation and grammar.This week we are looking at punctuation. Punctuation is important as it gives meaning to our written words, much like pausing and changes in tone of the voice when speaking. An error in punctuation can communicate a different meaning to the one you intended.

Narrative Writing - Planning
Walt: add detail to our writing by using descriptive language.Walt: write stories with a complete orientation, problem, and resolution Instructions:
Over the last few weeks we have looked at planning and writing narratives.
Last week we looked adding descriptive language to paint a picture in the mind of our readers (showing not telling).
We then were given scenario's where we had to write a show not tell sentence and paragraph.
This we we are going to put all our learning into action.
Using your imagination, write a story about this picture.

3 - Show your reader how your character's are feeling without telling them i.e. do not use feeling words (sad, happy, excited, scared, upset, tired) allowed.
