Learning objectives:
Identifying and defining the characteristics of a health-related field, and calculating what is needed using the spreadsheet.
Process:
Together, the group must define the profile of the person that will follow the diet. The calories this person will need each day must be established using the spreadsheet.
ORGANISING THE LOCATION WHERE THE INFORMATION WILL BE SAVED
The first step you need to take is to organise the location where you will save the work on your computer. Remember that some of the work will be done in small groups, whilst other parts will be done individually.
Come up with a group name for quick and easy identification.
Form a group of no more than 3 or 4 people. Next, elect a moderator, a spokesperson, a secretary and a person to monitor the time, to orientate and save the group work to be done.
The coordinator must create a folder with the group name, in the location specified by the teacher. The coordinator must save the group work in progress in this location. Regarding the rest of the group, each member must create a folder with their name. The work done individually by each member must be saved in this folder.
In the “Attached files” at the bottom, open the document entitled “Coversheet”; then save it in your folder with the name of “Work title”.
In the “Attached files” at the bottom, open the document entitled “Self-assessment”; then save it in your folder with the name of “Self-assessment”.
DEFINING THE PROFILE AND CALCULATING THE AMOUNT OF CALORIES
Once the small groups have been formed, the first task is to define the profile of the person that will follow the diet; to do this, open the “Calorie calculation” document that is in “Attached files” and observe which variables should be taken into account to calculate the diet: weight, height, age, sex and level of physical activity. Decide upon a value for each of these variables, thus creating the profile of the person that will follow the diet.
Once the profile has been chosen, inform the teacher before continuing to ensure that all the groups have different profiles. Once the teacher has approved the choices, open the spreadsheet entitled “Calorie calculation” that is in the “Attached files”, and individually calculate the daily amount of calories that correspond to the chosen profile. This spreadsheet has two write protected tabs: one entitled “pending completion” and the other “completed”. Use the write protection tab entitled “pending completion” to enter the formulas and to perform the calculation. To check that what you have done is correct, consult the write protection tab “completed”.
Once the calculation has been made, save the spreadsheet in your folder entitled “My calorie calculation”.

“My calorie calculation” spreadsheet.
You have finished this activity!
Evaluation
- What the teacher will assess:
- Well-written formulas.
- Correctly entered variables in the formula.
- Correctly calculated calories.
- Skillfull use of the spreadsheet.
- Self-assessment:
Open the “Self-assessment sheet” document and once you have filled out the part corresponding to today’s work, save it again in your folder.
