Week 14

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. We have a full, busy week ahead:

Wednesday is an Early Release Day; 12:15 dismissal.

In Readers Workshop, we will continue to explore nonfiction, informational texts.

Focus of teaching points:

1. Readers approach narrative and expository texts differently; As I read narrative nonfiction, I picture what I’m reading as a mental movie (like when reading fiction). When I read expository text, I create images/models in my mind (boxes and bullets, timelines, diagrams). I add on to these images as I get more information.

2. When I can’t keep the main ideas straight or figure out how the information goes together, I reread, stopping after each chunk to review what I have read. I ask, “Is this a new subtopic or does it add onto what I have already learned?”

3. As I read about a topic, I keep track of the new words the text is teaching me and use them to teach others about the topic.

We will begin Fundations Unit 6; the open syllable, open syllable exceptions and the soft sounds of c and g.  Family resources can be found HERE.

In Writer's Workshop, we will create Tables of Contents to plan out more nonfiction articles, and use "boxes and bullets" to outline subtopics and important details.

In Math, we will continue learning about place value, different ways of representing 3 digit numbers & addition and subtraction strategies (with and without regrouping).

In Social Studies we will begin Cluster 2: This cluster explores the relationship of Indigenous peoples with the land, water, and all living things, and how that relationship impacts how Indigenous people live.
