Week 30

Class Notes:

It’s Spring Conference time! I look forward to meeting with you and sharing your 3rd grader’s portfolio of work.

This Wednesday is an Early Release Day – dismissal is at 12:15 PM.

We will begin Fundations Unit 12, focusing on the soft sounds of c and g. Students will review that the letter c makes the /s/ sound when followed by e, i, or y (as in cent, city, cycle), and that the letter g makes the /j/ sound when followed by e, i, or y (as in gem, giant, apology).

We will also work on spelling words with these sounds and learn that -nce and -nge can appear at the end of closed syllables (e.g., fence, lunge). The silent e at the end is there to change the sound of c or g—it does not make its own sound. Additionally, I will explain that English words do not end in the letter j.

To wrap up our Fractions unit, students will play Fractions Jeopardy and review all the concepts we’ve learned in preparation for the unit assessment on Tuesday.

After the break, we will begin a new unit on Measurement. Students will explore length using halves and fourths of an inch and represent their data on line plots. They’ll also learn to estimate and work with various units of measurement—including weight, liquid volume, and time—and apply the four operations to solve real-world measurement problems.

The State Fair Home Project  is due on Wednesday, May 28th.  Students should choose their project this week and be ready to begin working on it right after the break. I will provide a variety of examples and ideas in class to help them get started. The actual State Fair for parents is on Friday, May 30th from 8:30-9:30 AM.

Repeat Announcements:

Message from Mr. Martin, our P.E. teacher

The annual Mitchell Bike Rodeo will be held on Tuesday May 6th.  The rain date will be Tuesday May 13th. The Bike Rodeo is a special event where our third graders learn the essentials of being a responsible bike rider in our communities.  There are four content areas included in the bike rodeo: bike safety, bike maintenance, helmet safety, and the road course.  If a third grader is able to participate in all four content areas, they will receive a bike license.  The bike license demonstrates that the student is capable of riding more independently in their community .  Please review this Bike Rodeo presentation to help your child practice.

What do I need for the Bike Rodeo?

We need our helmet, and our 2 wheel bike.  If you are not able to bring your bike or helmet, we have bikes and helmets that have been donated by the Needham Police Department.  If your child is able to bring their bike we recommend putting their name on it with masking/painters tape.  You can park them outside the Mitchell gym on the day of the event.

Music: We have Music on Thursdays-- please remind your 3rd graders to return their recorder.

Media: Our book swapping day is on Wednesdays--please help your 3rd graders return their library books.

Thank you to Mr. Fischer (Matthew's dad), last week's Mystery Reader. Would you like to volunteer as our next Mystery Reader? Click HERE to sign up.
