WEEK 9

We have another exciting week ahead in Room 11!

Storybook Pumpkin Patch: Reminder to everyone participating in the Storybook Pumpkin Patch: Please bring your pumpkins to the Media Center tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday. All of the pumpkins will be on display in the OLC on Wednesday from 8:05 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. The kids’ creativity is amazing, and we can’t wait to see all of their wonderful storybook creations on display!

Fall Conferences will soon be here. I’m looking forward to meeting with you, sharing your third grader’s portfolio of work, and discussing their goals for the year. It’s always such a joy to celebrate how much they’ve already grown! 

Writing: We will put the finishing touches on our Magic Tree House stories by revising, editing, and getting our books ready to share. We can’t wait to celebrate all of our hard work at our Publishing Party!

Reading & Writing: We will learn how to take notes from nonfiction texts using a graphic organizer. Students will practice identifying the main idea and important details and using their notes to write a well-organized paragraph.

Math: We will continue Unit 2 in Illustrative Mathematics: Area and Multiplication. Students will explore different square units, including square centimeters, square feet, and square meters. We will also begin calculating the area of rectangles without a grid, using what we know about multiplication and the relationship between rows and columns.

Science: Last Wednesday, teachers from the Science Center visited our class and led an exploration of how scientists use fossil evidence to learn about the past. Students used clues from fossils to identify a mystery animal! This week, we will kick off our Creature Feature animal adaptation project, which is always a fan favorite in third grade! Students will begin exploring how animals’ features help them survive in their environments.

Social-Emotional Learning: We will begin our new Second Step unit on bullying, focusing on recognizing bullying and understanding what makes it different from other hurtful behaviors.

Accessing Google Classroom, ST Math & Boost at Home: Many students have asked if they can access Google Classroom, ST Math, and Boost (an online literacy tool) from home. Yes! With parent permission and supervision, students can access these tools from a home device.

Google Classroom: Follow the directions HERE to log in to Google Classroom.

ST Math & Boost: Students can access both programs through Clever. Clever badges will be sent home in students’ red communication folders. Students can also log in using their school Google credentials, which they are still working on memorizing.

Repeat Announcements

Warm Clothes and Footwear:
 The heat is ON! Now that the heaters are running, our classroom can get quite toasty. Pro tip: students should dress in layers so they can bundle up for recess but have a lighter layer to stay comfortable indoors. If your child wears rain or snow boots to school, please send in a pair of indoor shoes, sneakers, or even slippers. They’ll be much more comfortable moving around the classroom and school in dry shoes.

Library Reminder: Our book swap day in the Media Center is every Monday. Please help your child remember to return their library books.


Third Grade Homework Expectations

3rd graders are expected to read for 25-30 minutes each night. Third graders can choose to read independently, read with a partner,  listen to audiobooks or enjoy a family read aloud. The big idea is to encourage a life-long love of reading!


School Breakfast Eaters

YAY! I’ve noticed a big improvement in the number of students arriving right at 8:05, which gives them plenty of time to grab breakfast, eat, and still get settled and started on their morning work. Thank you! One little reminder: school breakfast is definitely a great way to start the day, but once breakfast is finished, it’s time to jump into our morning routine. We’re working on making those first few minutes count!


A Quick Shoe Reminder

I love a good pair of Crocs as much as anyone, but in third grade, our feet need to be playground and P.E. ready! Crocs and flip-flops can slip off while running, climbing, and playing, and they have a funny way of escaping when we’re sitting on the rug, too! Please send your child to school in secure, supportive shoes that stay on their feet so they can safely run, jump, climb, and learn. Thank you!

By building your home library with Scholastic, you will also be helping to build our classroom library. The more books students order, the more free books we get for our classroom library!
