Walkaround

Task 1

Find a product/object made using two different materials (composite). Show and explain the bonding technique used and state whether it is a permanent or temporary joining method.

These walls were constructed using concrete. Concrete is bonded by the Portland cement. Cement, when wet (and usually powdered), acts as a bonding agent with the rocks and sediment. This bond is temporary.

Task 2

Find a product/object that has been manufactured from ceramic materials and describe its properties and characteristics in context of its function. (Urinal)

Properties: Has a high strength, fracture resistance, resistant to wear, has friction to keep people in place, and is anti-static. All of these properties is applicable to the function of a toilet bowl, which supports the weight of people, while being resistant to wear and tear that comes from years of use.

Task 3

Identify/compare three products – one made from ferrous, one from non-ferrous metals and an alloy

Ferrous: Stainless steel

(in-dorm timer)

Non-ferrous: aluminum foil

(Design-tech pen)

Alloy:

Task 4

Identify/compare two products – one made from softwood and one from hard wood.

Hardwood - school cabinet

Softwood - Pencil

Task 5

Identify a product made from soda glass, borosilicate (pyrex), laminated, and toughened glass. How can you tell?
