Mick McKellar Update--Day +81
The intrepid walkers traversed the cool and windy city to the hospital only once today. My doctors have decided to switch the medication I take to prevent pneumonia from Dapsone (tiny pills) to Mepron (a suspension) because they suspect Dapsone in the untimely murder of so many of my red blood cells.
We originally planned to pick up a refill of the Dapsone pills today, but my transplant coordinator called and asked me to bring a scrip for Mepron down to the pharmacy and compare co-payments before making the purchase. The amounts were close enough they decided I should try the Mepron and see what happens to my hemo.
The mystery continues...
Trying to balance my blood glucose remains an exercise in frustration. I ate exactly the same lunch yesterday and today, yet yesterday's afternoon reading was an acceptable 120 and today's was 170! Maybe I stopped and smelled the cookies once too often...the cookies I can't have.
Did I mention that there are people here who seem to spend most of their free time baking goodies to share with the other residents? On a table between the two kitchens, there is an area for sharing. Folks who leave often leave baked goods behind there, or others just like to share. I walk past that table many times each day, and the palms of my hands itch to stop and grab. Sometimes, I give in...but not yesterday or today.
Nothing of note happened medically today. The rash continues to improve, I think. The cooler weather, gray skies, and stiff wind today triggered another round of homesickness. Your cards, e-mails, and communications really help with that. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts.
God bless and good night,
Mick
