VIET 102, Project 1

3. Explore A

You will work in groups of 3 and use Vietnamese to provide help information in the form of a bilingual Tờ Hướng Dẫn (Help Information Brochure) for a Vietnamese immigrant or immigrant family starting a new life in the US.

Remember that the Vietnamese immigrants may not speak English well.

You can upload the Brochure Template below as a Google Doc and collaborate among group members.

You will present your brochure to the class in groups and donate your materials to local immigrant services agencies or the international students office on your campus.

1. PROCEDURE

Step 1: Forming Group

3

Form groups of 3. Someone in your group should know a Vietnamese-speaking person who is familiar with the needs by new Vietnamese immigrants to the US. You will interview that person and record the interview.

Step 2: Gathering Information & Preparation for Interview

Chicago

Prepare for the interview with the Vietnamese immigrant by brainstorming what a Vietnamese person (or family) will need to start a new life in the US (assume that they have brought very little possessions from Vietnam). You will gather information in your hometown and form questions to ask the interviewee. Ask your teacher to give feedback on your questions.

    1. what they need to buy for daily use and to wear
    2. the best places (cheapest, most convenient, best quality, etc.) in town to buy these objects. Get the names and addresses of the stores and directions to get there. List the objects that can be bought at each place.
    3. how they can find a place to live. Gather information about the types of housing for rent in town (describe what each type has to offer, its price range, and your recommendations of suitable neighborhood).
    4. how they can get around in town. Gather information about good means of transportation (public and private means of transportation, how to use them, their advantages and disadvantages, cost).
    5. things they should or should not do in daily communication in the US

Step 3: Interview

NYC

You will interview a Vietnamese person and record the interview about what they think a new Vietnamese immigrant may need.

Record your interview for later study. You can interview the Vietnamese person several times or all in one time.

In your interview:

  1. Ask about what new immigrants may need: "Nếu có một người Việt mới qua Mỹ sinh sống thì họ cần những thông tin gì để bắt đầu cuộc sống mới?" Ask follow-up questions to get detailed information.
  2. Have the interviewee role-play in Vietnamese with each of you the following scenarios:
        • At the shop: you're trying to buy something for daily use, a clothing item, or a piece of furniture, and the Vietnamese interviewee will be a storekeeper.
          • You can introduce the role-play like this: "Bây giờ mình đang ở cửa hàng tạp hoá ở Việt Nam. Bác/ anh/ chị... giả làm người bán hàng. Tôi/ em/ con sẽ giả làm người mua hàng." In your role as the customer, try to buy at least 3 things.
        • Renting a place to live: you are trying to rent a place, and the Vietnamese interviewee will be a landlord.
          • Before the interview, you need to find some pictures of places to rent so the interviewee can choose one to talk about. You can introduce the role-play like this: "Bây giờ bác/ anh/ chị... giả làm chủ nhà. ôi/ em/ con sẽ giả làm người đi thuê nhà." In your role as a potential renter, try to ask about
            • what the place has (rooms, furniture,
            • how far the place is from an important place to you (school, market, town center, etc.)
            • the rent amount
        • Asking and giving directions: Imagine a scenario in which a Vietnamese immigrant may be likely to need to ask for directions from a stranger in the street (e.g., going to a store, a bank, a school, a bus stop). You will act as that Vietnamese immigrant to the US who needs to ask for directions and the Vietnamese interviewee will be a local person.

Use as many language forms you have learned as possible in these role-plays.

After the role-play, ask the interviewee to give suggestions to help you speak Vietnamese more naturally.

3. Ask for their advice about appropriateness in social interaction in society in the US: "Trong cách giao tiếp ứng xử ở Mỹ, người Việt mới sang Mỹ sinh sống nên tránh những điều gì và nên làm những điều gì?" Ask follow-up questions to get detailed information.

Step 4: Creating the Help Information Brochure

cityscape

Based on the recorded interview in Step 3 and information you gathered in Step 2, write the content of the bilingual (Vietnamese and English) Help Information Brochure. Use the template provided.

Each group member can draft one bilingual pair of dialogs (Vietnamese and English) and the other members give feedback. Feel free to seek suggestions from your interviewee on the language of the dialogs.

Together as a group, write the "dos and dont's" notes for Item 7 in the Brochure Content below.

Each group member should be in charge of drafting a section of the brochure, and the other group members give feedback. Once the group's draft is complete, submit it to your teacher for feedback.

Step 5: Presentation

  • Present your brochure orally in class
  • Submit the written brochure to your teacher for evaluation and feedback.

Step 6: Thanking

Write a thank-you note to the interviewee in Vietnamese. Your teacher can help with the language if necessary.

2. HELP INFORMATION CONTENT

Tờ Hướng Dẫn Cho Người Việt Mới Đến Sống Ở Mỹ

Download this Brochure Template to create a bilingual brochure in Vietnamese and English (see pdf version of the template).

Your brochure must include these sections:

  1. Tựa đề: A title
  2. Mở đầu: Introduction (one sentence about the purpose of the brochure or website and its target audience)
  3. Các thứ cần thiết: Basic necessities to buy for daily use (give brief information as specified on the template)
  4. Thuê nhà: Renting a place to live (give brief information as specified on the template)
  5. Phương tiện đi lại: Recommended means of transportation (give brief information as specified on the template)
  6. Mẫu hội thoại: One example dialog in English and one example dialog in Vietnamese for each of the 3 situations (shopping, renting a place, and asking for directions). These examples should highlight the pragmatic norms in Vietnamese and American cultures in business transaction (e.g., bargaining, ways to request for goods, types of housing). The pairs of dialogs should be as natural as possible and should not be direct translations of each other.
  7. Nên và không nên: Make a list of 3 dos and 3 don'ts in communication when shopping, renting a place, and asking for directions in the US/ Vietnam. These dos and don'ts may be illustrated in the examples in 6.
  8. Tác giả: List your group members' names at the bottom of the first page.

3. PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

  • Your group will present your Help Information in front of the class. Print enough brochure copies to give everyone.
    • One student in your group will be the narrator, covering sections 1-5 and item 7 above,
    • The other two students will illustrate the sample dialogs in Vietnamese in section 6 above.
  • When another group is presenting, you will listen and give them feedback by commenting on the brochure copy they gave you. Try to write at least 3 comments and ask at least 1 oral question during the presentation. You can:
    • correct language errors
    • raise questions about the content or language use
    • give specific compliments on what they did well

4. PROJECT EVALUATION

  • Your teacher will evaluate your written Help Information using this rubric.
  • Your teacher will evaluate your oral presentation using this rubric.
  • Your teacher will evaluate your feedback for your peer by collecting the brochures you commented on and using this rubric.

Next, go to the Reflection page to wrap up this project.
