These language lessons and exercises will help you complete the tasks in this project. Please preview the Help Information Content to plan ahead how you will be using these language forms.

1. Talking about everyday objects

  • Chapter 11 in "Let's speak Vietnamese" textbook
  • Practice Chapter 11 at the Online Learning Center
  • Describe one of these offices and your classmates will guess which one you are describing.
  • Take photos of your living room, your desk, and your bedroom, and label as many objects in Vietnamese as you can. Bring your photos to class and with a partner, without showing the photos to each other, ask and answer questions in Vietnamese to find out the things you have in common. Circle these things you have in common. For the objects you don't have, ask to borrow them from your partner. When your partner asks to borrow your things, you can loan them to your partner if it's OK with you, or you can refuse. (This is only for language practice, you don't have to actually loan the objects to your classmate!)

2. Buying common things to wear

  • Chapter 12 in "Let's speak Vietnamese" textbook
  • Practice Chapter 12 at the Online Learning Center
  • Practice describing the people in the photos in the Entry A and Entry B pages: What are they wearing?
  • Work in pairs. Use Google image search to find a few full-body photos of a famous person in different attires (e.g., "Obama full body"). Describe what they are wearing in one of the photos and let the other student guess which photo you are describing.
  • Work with a partner. Imagine one of you is a shop owner and one of you is a customer at one of these shops. Practice buying and selling a few things at that shop in Vietnamese. In the end, each pair will act out their dialog and the class will guess which shop they are at.

3. How to talk about rooms and houses

  • Chapter 13 in "Let's speak Vietnamese"
  • Work with a partner and look at the collections of houses, living rooms, bed rooms, and kitchens in the links below. For each category, which one would you like to have? Describe the house or furniture in the room and your partner will guess which one you are describing.
  • Draw the floor plan of your house or apartment. With a partner and without showing each other your drawing, describe your house/ apartment and find out how many similarities there are between your houses/ apartment.
  • Look up the rental listings at this website. You can select the city to search in by clicking on the "chọn tỉnh/ thành phố" menu.
  • Work in pairs. Each of you will choose one listing and pretend you are the owner of that listing. Look the address up on Google maps and find out how far the place is to the center of town.
  • Together, take turns to be the owner and prospective renter to talk about the rental place.
  • Bạn thấy giá thuê nhà ở Việt Nam thế nào so với giá thuê nhà ở nơi bạn sinh sống?

4. How to talk about modes of transportation and directions

  • Chapter 14 in "Let's speak Vietnamese" textbook
  • Practice Chapter 14 at the Online Learning Center
  • What modes of transportation have you experienced? When did you use them? Where were you going?
  • Take a look at these photos of Vietnam. Discuss these questions in groups in Vietnamese.
    • What modes of transportation can you name?
    • Which ones seem to be most common?
    • Which ones seem to be from an earlier time in history?
    • Which ones would you feel comfortable using?
    • Which ones would you NOT feel comfortable using?
    • How do these pictures show the challenges and advantages of Vietnamese people's ways of getting around?
  • If you could travel to any place on earth, where would you go? How long would it take you to get there by different modes of transportation?
  • Work in pairs and take turns to give directions from the school to your house. Your partner will listen to your description and draw the route. At the end, check to see whether your partner's route is accurate!
