PROJECT OVERVIEW

Overview Project 3
  • Conduct several short interview sessions with a Vietnamese person (local Vietnamese or in Vietnam) and record these interviews (see tips and instructions for a successful interview recording).
  • Because your interview will be natural Vietnamese, you may not understand everything your interviewee says. If that happens, you can share the recording with your teacher and ask for help afterward. This is a great opportunity to learn real Vietnamese in natural context!
  • Then, describe the person to the class in an oral poster session in class and submit a written description to the teacher.
  • If possible, invite your interviewee and other Vietnamese speaking friends and family members to class on the presentation day.

1. PROCEDURE:

*Steps 1 - 4 will be completed in 4 cycles, each cycle covers a part in the Poster Content below. You will complete each cycle as you cover each language focus listed on the Resources page.

**Practice by answering the same questions about yourself first. Write your answers in a self-description and submit it to your teacher for feedback.

Step 1: Take a look at the Poster Content below. The poster content is broken into 4 Parts. For each part, you will prepare interview questions in Vietnamese to ask a Vietnamese-speaking person so that you can talk about them. Your teacher will give you feedback on these questions.

Step 2: Interview the person. Remember to record the interviews so you can listen to it again (see recording tips) and bring your recording to class to share with your classmates.

If you are interviewing a Vietnamese partner in Vietnam, set up online chat sessions (with Skype, Viber, etc.) to do the interviews and record the sessions.

Step 3: Take a photo of the person you interviewed or ask them to give you a photo of them. You will print this photo out (in color or black and white) on an A4 page and mount it on the inside of a file folder so that the photo can be displayed on a desk in class. On the opposite side of the folder, include illustration images for the description about the person. Here is an example:

Step 4: As soon as you complete each interview session, write a part of the description of the person you interviewed (see Poster Content below). In the end, the written, completed description should be about 200-250 words. You will not read your descriptions during your presentation but will submit the written descriptions to your teacher for feedback and grading.

Step 5: Have the Vietnamese person you interviewed check your written description of them for language and fact accuracy. Revise the notes based on his/her feedback.

Step 6: Submit the complete recordings of your 4 interview sessions to your teacher via Google Drive or a similar file sharing tool. See recording tips and instructions.

Step 7: Participate in a poster session in class. Invite your interviewee and Vietnamese-speaking friends and family members to the poster session. Poster session format:

  • Set-up:
    • half of the class will present their posters first
    • each presenter will put the portrait of a Vietnamese person on his/her desk
    • the other half of the class will be the audience and visit the presenter's desks. Keep in mind that the class will discuss the poster contents
  • Presentation:
    • the presenters will tell the audience about the person in the portrait (see Poster Content below)
    • the audience can ask questions
  • Rotate:
    • after a set amount of time (3-5 minutes), the teacher will signal for the audience to move to another station
    • the presentation cycle begins again for a few times until each audience member has visited most presenters' desks
  • Switch:
    • the audience half of the class will now set up their posters and present
  • Wrap-up:
    • all students put their posters up and take a group picture with their posters

Step 8: Submit your 2 written descriptions (one about yourself, one about the interviewee, about 200-250 words each) to the teacher for feedback and grading. Share your files with the teacher via Google Drive or a similar file sharing tool.

Step 9: Write a thank you note in Vietnamese to the person who allowed you to interview them. As a class, you will brainstorm what you want to say and your teacher will help you with the language.

2. POSTER CONTENT

Use this content guide to help you prepare and organize your oral poster presentation and the written description. The content has been grouped together into 4 parts to match the items on the Resources page. You should complete these grouped points as soon as you can. In your description about yourself and your description about the interviewee, include the following:

  2. Nghề nghiệp (occupation)
  3. Nơi sinh và nơi đang sống (place of birth and place of residence)
  4. Tuổi (rough age or exact age)
  5. Cảm xúc trong ảnh (feelings when the photo was taken)
  6. Gia đình (family members, their relationship to the person, their occupations, where they live now, their marital status. Include the person's family tree in Vietnamese (you may use this website to help you prepare the tree). [link back to the Resources that can help you with these items]

PART 2:

  1. Thói quen hàng ngày (everyday habits)
  2. Sở thích, thú vui khi rảnh hoặc hoạt động cuối tuần (hobbies and interests; this may include activities they do or are interested in watching)

  4. Khi vui, buồn, căng thẳng thì làm gì (what to do when being happy, sad, stressed) [link back to the Resources that can help you with these items]

PART 3:

  1. Hình dáng bản thân (how the person described their own physical appearance and how you would describe the person, including face shape, eye color, eye size, hair color, hair length, height, body type, skin tone, age) [link back to the Resources that can help you with these items]

  2. Self-definition statement (Ba/ Má/ Bác/ Cô/ Chú/ Anh/ Chị... tự nói về mình như thế nào? Ví dụ, "Tôi là người....") [link back to the Resources that can help you with these items]

3. PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

  • Nói tiếng Việt 100%!
  • You need to talk to the audience, not read your notes. The written descriptions are for grading and feedback only.
  • Your teacher will let you know how long your poster presentation should be.
  • Rehearse and practice so you will speak naturally!
  • Audience members will need to listen and ask questions so that you can participate in the Reflection discussions afterward.

4. PROJECT OUTCOME

It's time to show your findings to the world! Your class and teacher can decide on which options to use:

OPTION A: Producing a "Portraits of Vietnamese People in [Your Town]" book

  1. Share with your teacher via Google Drive the following:
    1. the photo of your interviewee
    2. your written description of the interviewee in Vietnamese
    3. a photo of yourself
    4. your self-description in Vietnamese (this will be included in the "About the Authors" section)
    5. Ask the interviewee to see if they prefer to be anonymous or known by real name
  2. Your teacher will compile an electronic book for the whole class.
  3. Each of you will receive a copy of the book electronically.
  4. Share the book with your interviewee, family, and friends.

OPTION B: Holding a Photo Exhibit on "Portraits of Vietnamese People in [Your Town]" on your campus

  1. Print a large photo of your interviewee on photo paper (your teacher will specify the size)
  2. Print your written description of the interviewee in Vietnamese
  3. Print a translation of your written description above into English
  4. Ask the interviewee if they prefer to be anonymous of known by name. If they own a business and would like to spread the word about their business, mentioning it in your exhibit may be a benefit for them.
  5. Tell your friends, other classmates, and family members about the date and place of the Exhibit (your teacher will tell you the time and location); it might be a good idea to announce them on social media
  6. On the day of the Exhibit, display your photo and written descriptions as captions for Vietnamese- and English-speaking audience
  7. Take your materials down after the Exhibit

5. PROJECT EVALUATION

  • Your poster presentation will be evaluated using this rubric.
  • Your written descriptions (one of yourself, one of the interviewee) will be evaluated using this rubric.
  • Your interview recordings will be evaluated using this rubric.

Next, go to the Reflection page to wrap up this project.
