Ch 13 Evolution/Creation

Theories of Origins (Ch 13)

Objectives

Sect 1: Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection

    1. identify several observations that led Darwin to conclude that species evolve.

    2. Relate the process of natural selection to its outcome.

    3. Summarize the main points of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection as it is stated today.

    4. Contrast the gradualism and punctuated equilibrium models of evolution.

Sect 2: Evidence of Evolution and Creation

    1. Describe how the fossil record supports evolution.

    2. Summarize how biological molecules such as proteins and DNA are used as evidence of evolution mechanisms.

    3. Infer how comparing the anatomy and development of living species provides evidence of evolution mechanism.

Sect 3: Examples of Evolution & Creation

    1. Identify four elements in the process of natural selection.

    2. Describe how natural selection has affected the bacteria that cause tuberculosis.

    3. Relate natural selection to the beak size of finches.

    4. Summarize the process of species formation.

Spiritual Concept

Evolutionary mechanisms apply to today's world very well. Some have proposed that Darwin's discovery of natural selection is a good explanation for how a "fallen" world works. If so, evolutionary mechanisms are actually a part of the creation paradigm, as "fallen" world mechanisms.

    1. Do you think any evolutionary mechanisms could have been in place prior to the "original sin"?

    2. Evolutionism is a philosophy of naturalism using evolutionary mechanisms to create and sustain the world. Creationism is a philosophy of a Creator using supernatural mechanisms to create and sustain the world. The Bible is very clear that God is in control of everything, including weather (rain, sun), growing food (grass, flowers, grains, fruits), and other "natural" phenomena. Address the issue of whether God can use either supernatural or natural means to create and/or sustain the world.
