The damage of The Great Blizzard of 1888 was incredible. It costed 25 million dollars in damage which in today's dollars would be over a billion.

The Blizzard caused 40 to 50 inches of snow! Sustained wind gusts of over 45 MPH grew snow drifts of over 50 feet covering 3 story houses. The blizzard lasted from March 11th to the 14th and the snow came down on the 12th.

The blizzard damaged Chesapeake Bay to Maine. The weather that proceed the storm was unseasonably mild with heavy rain that turned to snow as the temperature dropped rapidly. Railroads were shut down and in gridlock.

There were over 400 fatalities during the storm. People were confined to their homes for a week. After the storm, New York began placing their telephone poles underground incase of future destruction. The storm was partially responsible for placing railroad tracks underground which opened 9 years later in boston.
