The 1888 hurricane surprised many people with its coming very late in the season. It was one of the most severe hurricanes American history. More than 50 inches of snow fell. 400 people died from the sheer cold of the snow. The storm first hit Montana early in the day and swept through Dakota early afternoon. After Dakota the Blizzard hit Nebraska and boy, did it cause some damage. It was probably
more surprising that it was a warm day before the blizzard hit. Winds from 45 miles per hour raged. The snow from The 1888 Blizzard was not dusty or thin, it was quite powdery.
People call this blizzard The Schoolhouse Blizzard because of all of the children that died. Those children were trapped inside of the schoolhouse because school had not ended by the time the storm started. Schoolhouses were not heated, so most froze to death. Some schoolhouse teachers sent the children home wile the blizzard was going on. Some children actually lived when the teachers sent them home. But almost all that stayed in the schoolhouse died. This tornado is one of the worst tornadoes in recorded history. Find out more info at this site
