Social & Emotional Development

We know that children’s personal, social and emotional development is crucial for children to lead healthy and happy lives, and is fundamental to their cognitive development. We ensure all classes focus on personal, social and emotional development (PSHE) throughout the day both incidentally and as part of taught sessions.

At Belmont Infants we ensure we build strong, warm and supportive relationships with the children in our care as these support them them in learning how to understand their own feelings and those of others.

Children are supported to manage emotions (all learn the Zones of Regulation, see below for more information), develop a positive sense of self, set themselves simple goals, have confidence in their own abilities, to persist and wait for what they want and direct attention as necessary.

Through adult modelling and expectations, children learn how to look after their bodies, including healthy eating, and manage personal needs independently. Through supported interaction with other children, they learn how to make good friendships, co-operate and resolve conflicts peaceably. These attributes will provide a secure platform from which children can achieve at school and in later life

Health and Relationship Education (HRE)

HRE teaches the fundamental building blocks and characteristics of positive relationships, with particular reference to friendships, family relationships, and relationships with other children and with adults to enable children make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships.   HRE is an integral element of a broader personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education programme - it has been compulsory for primary schools to teach HRE since September 2020.

Aims of HRE at Belmont Infants

Through teaching HRE, we aim to equip our children with the information, skills and values to have safe, fulfilling relationships. Quality HRE promotes the core values of respect, love and care. It also provides the opportunity for children and young people to reflect on their own attitudes and beliefs and those of their peers and others. This is consistent with our values and ethos as a school

It aims to teach children about five themes:

From Nursery through to Year 2 the children cover the following themes, taught by class teachers and focusing on one per half term linked to the class topic:

We use the Think Equal resources to support our teaching. Think Equal is a global initiative which calls for a system change in education, to end the discriminatory mindset and the cycle of violence across our world and ensure positive life outcomes for our children. Our Programmes - Think Equal
