Release Time

• Release Time authorizes a faculty member to teach fewer LEH than required in their contract, while still receiving 100% of their pay.
• Stipend Rate is determined by Human Resources; Dean and EVP of department must approve.
• When charging salary portions to a grant to pay for a faculty member’s release time, use the regular LEH rate. See detailed calculations at the end of this section.
• Faculty should not get both release time and a stipend under normal circumstances.

To calculate a faculty member’s LEH rate to charge the grant for release time:

Grant Accounting:

• In Datatel/HR, do a POSS search for the individual faculty member. Locate the most current entry for their main position. (i.e. disregard any overloads, etc.) Detail in to this listing, and select WAGS.

• In the example above, detail into the first line item for the fiscal year in question, and select the PWAG screen

• In this example, we can see that this faculty member is receiving an annual salary of $74,127.00 for a 10.5-month contract. Assume that this individual is getting 6 LEH of release time per year for working on the grant and that their actual benefits rate is 15%. Calculate this cost as follows:
  • $74,127 salary/ 36 LEH per contract = $2,059.00 per LEH
  • $2,059.00 per LEH x 6 LEH per year = $12,354.00 total salary cost
  • $12,354.00 total salary x 15% actual benefits = $1,853.10 total benefits
