Installing Tremulous for Newbies (Windows)

Hello user. If you are on this page, you must be here to try out an old aliens vs human FPS/RTS video game, TREMULOUS!

A recommended client for people completely new to Tremulous is the TremFusion client. While it isn't the most recent/latest, it is the most reliable and useful considering that most of Tremulous plays on an older protocol from 2006.

Just Download This (Self extractor containing the recommended Tremfusion Client for Tremulous 1.1 + default Assets)

or  This (Features include displaying Protocol 71 (1.3) servers as well as 69 (1,1) and 70 (gpp) servers. It is essentially the latest GPP client that supports 1.1 as well. However may not properly support 1.1 (69) and GPP (70) protocols on Windows)

or get a newer (but lacks features that tremfusion has) client from GrangerHub's 1.3 client:

https://github.com/GrangerHub/tremulous/releases

This is a All-In-One Installer - This is the main client you want since the old client from tremulous.net is very shit due to its age and lack of user friendliness when widescreens weren't even a thing yet. The installer includes maps, basic assets and the binary that will create a new GuID for you which are used for server administration and registration

Other / Extras:

Third-Party Server Browser: Apelsin Server Browser - You can browse the server list without the need to open your client. You need to configure its basics though by specifying where your client binaries are so it can launch them. Also shows unvanquished servers, has an auto refresh feature, and a list of a few old clans, and a player search function. Does not show Protocol 71 servers yet, though we can arrange with GrangerHub to fix that up for us later.

Tremulous 1.2 GPP - Stock Client + SEGFAULT (Stock client comes with an installer, requires 1.1 client. SEGFAULT client is a custom binary that improves upon the stock client by implementing some, but not all Tremfusion features.). You will need this version to play on 1.2 GPP servers, not that there are many left.

Coming S00N™:

Tremulous 1.3 - Multi Protocol 1.3 Client (Coming S00N™ from grangerhub.com) Features include displaying Protocol 71 servers as well as 69 (1,1) and 70 (gpp) servers

Note: I personally don't recommend installing 1.2 because 1.1 is where most of the action is at anyway and 1.2 isn't a necessity unless you want to specifically connect to the (somewhat empty EDGE server)

Synopsis:

Tremulous is an online, open sourced and completely free multiplayer game, categorised as Fast Paced / First Person Shooter (FPS), Team-Based Real Time Strategy (RTS) Aliens vs Human (AvH, where both teams are unique where Aliens in particular, aren't just copy-paste of the Human team (example: Halo, Resistance etc.).

Tremulous is quite an old game that started its development in late 2000 and had its first public release in 2005 in the form of the a Quake 3 Mod, labelled version '1.0' which can be run with Quake 3 or Open Arena. However most of the community is spread between 1.1 and 1.2 GPP (GamePlay Preview) versions with 1.1 being the most successful after its release in 2006, as 1.2 GPP had some changes that 1.1 veterans in particular didn't like. The game versions aren't compatible with each other.

There's quite a lot of history as to why 1.2 isn't just called '1.2' and is called 'GPP' and some of these reasons include lack of proper sound licensing credit (sources not listed, mainly just the license 'CC-SA' and 'CC-NC-SA' types), updating models, updating

Protocol Versions are listed below, note that because the protocols are different, the client and server may not connect if their protocols are the same, with a few exceptions such as using the /serverstatus or serverinfo <IP Address:Port Number> commands, and the recent multi-protocol GrangerHub community servers and a soon to come, Tremulous 1.3 client release (the 1.3 is just a title, it's not official by Darklegion Developement but rather largely developed 1.2 modification by the GrangerHub community).
