A serving soldier, he was mobilised and drafted to France at the commencement of hostilities and found in the Retreat from Mons, and in the Battles of the Aisne, and the Marne. He died gloriously on the field of battle at Neuve Chapelle on March 10th 1915 and lies buried there. He was entitled to the Mons Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. "A valiant soldier with undaunted heart he breasted Life's last hill".
