In 1911 Edwin Tomes, a 12-year-old schoolboy, was sharing two rooms with his mother and sister, at 26 Gladstone Terrace, Battersea. He was born in Cosham, Hampshire. Edwin's widowed mother, Christina Tomes, 49, a machinist, was born in St Petersburg, Russia. His sister, also called Christina, and also working as a machinist, was born in Portsmouth. Edwin and his sister had three siblings, one of whom, Laurence Tomes, is also remembered on the Holy Trinity memorial.
