In 1911 Clapham-born James Leslie Eardley Dougal, 21 and working as an apprentice constructional engineer, lived with his parents, Robert Dougal, 54, a civil engineer specialising in carriage and wagon engineering (he also worked as a commercial agent) from Easthampton, and Mary Eardley Dougal, 51, from Widnesbury, Stafford, and maternal grandmother, Kate Palmer, 81, from Leicester, at 14 The Chase, Clapham, a 10-roomed house. James was an only child.
