In 1911 Ernest John Tutt, then 15, was working as an errand boy. The census states that he was born in Dulwich (the Soldiers Died database gives his birthplace as Clapham). Ernest's father, Ernest E. Tutt, 39, was a smith's hammerman from Battersea. His mother, France M. Tutt, 39, was born in Clapham. There were four siblings, all born in Clapham:
