In 1911 Charles Abel Field, aged 16, born in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, was a junior clerk in manufacturing. He lived with his parents, Charles Field, 39, a grocer and provision dealer from Hertford, Hertfordshire, and mother Alice Field, 43 and also from Hertford, who worked in the business. There were two other siblings: Ethel Olive May Field, 12, born in Clerkenwell, east London, and Herbert Edward Field, 9, born in Clapton, east London. The family lived in four rooms at 235 Rushmore Road, Clapton Park.
