Bears in Oregon?

During our recent trip to Oregon we stayed at the Scott Lake walk-in campground, just a few miles from the PCT where it crosses Mackenzie Pass. And we were amazed to find these garbage cans in place. Apparently, even though this is beautiful and wild forest, there are no bears (or raccoons, for the matter.) Must be nice not to have to worry about that...

Later, along the Mackenzie River at Koosah Falls, we saw more traditional bear-proof garbage cans.
