Gear: Our Thoughts on What Works and What Doesn't in the High Sierra

We are not gearheads. We do not think that the coolest thing about backpacking is the new and very sexy equipment that you can buy. One of the reasons we like backpacking is because we don’t have to spend thousands of dollars to have fun doing it. So with that in mind, let’s talk about backpacking equipment. Simple is sweet.

What do you really need? Let’s start with the big items, and then go from there. And we are intentionally going to leave the backpack for last, because until you have the rest of this equipment, you won’t know what kind of backpack you’ll need. Trust us on that one.
