6x6 in., origami paper and mod podge on board
Ripped and glued paper to background, individually made ladybugs, added paper details, glued to boards
Wanted a piece about ladybugs because of their beauty, and thought about what could make them “ugly.” Led to idea of love and loss/deterioration.
Mary Benson
I wanted to make a piece about ladybugs because I think they are one bug that most people don’t think is ugly, creepy, or crawly. I also thought of their nickname, lovebugs, and how that could translate into a piece about love, and more specifically, love and loss. I used the ideas of deterioration after loss to also mimic how humans have infiltrated natural spaces to create even more destruction. I tried paint at first, inspired by Mary Benson, but I didn’t like how the paint looked on the board, and was generally dissatisfied with it. I remembered a piece I did sophomore year with my origami papers, and I remembered really liking it. That led me to create the piece with paper, and use that to tear up the leaf to show destruction.
I first experimented with the paint, but then I revised to the paper after I disliked working with it. Prior to any medium choices, however, I messed around with the composition. I had the idea for this piece for a while, and I kept on fiddling with the composition/meaning of the piece during that time. I sketched out what I wanted the piece to look like so when I cut out the paper, it wouldn’t feel like I was going in blind.
