Caterpillar changing before metamorphosis to reflect young girls trying to mature at a young age
Sketched w/ pencil, used alcohol markers then small marks w/ colored pencil+white marker for depth
For this piece, I decided to focus in on humanizing insects because I think that might evolve into my final inquiry. I wanted something that could be a reflection of people and a human experience, so I landed on using a caterpillar changing before metamorphosis to relate to young girls maturing at a young age. I then landed on markers because of how permanent they are, representing how change can’t be done before it’s time, and colored pencils to give depth. I also used embroidery thread for a bow, to ensure that the viewer could understand that the wings were meant to look fake.
I definitely know that I want to do another digital piece. Especially because I’m going on a plane for February break, it would be great to get another piece done. I’m not sure what that piece will be, but I will hopefully be able to get some feedback on a plan before next week. This piece will also help when I revise my inquiry. I still need to find the link between my pieces, but I think this piece is helpful in knowing that I am straying away from the beauty v. ugliness path.
Originally, my idea for this piece was shaky. I started with the insect I wanted to focus on, initially wanting to do another piece comparing beauty and ugliness using a butterfly and caterpillar. That eventually evolved into an obvious investigation in my opinion, using caterpillars to reflect modern girls and maturation. I practiced sketching different caterpillars before sketching my final, as well as testing out markers on different paper. I also experimented with colored pencil and white paint marker on alcohol markers. I also started my final piece thinking I would put butterfly wings on the caterpillar, but I eventually realized that fake fairy-esque wings would be more effective for my final idea.
