10x10, watercolor pencil and ink on watercolor paper
Progress Pictures:
Question: How can I reveal my grandmother’s traits and things important to her through pattern?
Materials: Watercolor pencils, pen
Process: Trying to represent my grandmother, I painted patches of a quilt with patterns signifying important things to her on them. She also quilts frequently which was the starting point for the subject. The patches are “sewn” together showing how her personality may be contrasting but works together.
Reflection on Work:
I synthesized my materials, processes and ideas in my work by using watercolor pencils to incorporate a more simple and sketchy style when combined with the black pen line art. I used a lot of water and very tiny brushes to build up different layers to get the colors I wanted. This piece of work was supposed to represent my grandmother and I did so by representing aspects of her through each of the patches. By combining them, I showed how my grandmother’s personality melds together, whether or not it parallels or contrasts. Using symbols of the larger picture, I made patterns for her personality
. This piece will inform me about moving forward in many ways. I have definitley learned to not do too many new things at once. If I had stuck to a medium or composition I was more familiar with, I believe this piece wouldn’t have taken as long and I would have been happier with the final product. My idea for my next piece is about my dad. I was thinking of having a 2 or 3 set piece, maybe linked together, with a print of my dad. On each canvas/board, I would paint a landscape of a place integral to him. Then, in a contrasting color, I would stamp my dad on each of them. This would show how regardless where my dad is, he remains the same. I think also making the landscape for Ireland more similar to the color I will use to print my dad and the landscape for America more different to emphasize he was going somewhere less known to him (and didn’t try to “fit in”).
