How can I depict the places my dad lived and his unchanged personality with landscapes and silhouettes?
Acrylic on board, 6 1/2 x 6 1/2
I synthesized materials and processes in deciding to paint landscapes representing where my dad has lived. In the first painting, of Ireland, I used Google Earth to gain a reference using my dad’s actual childhood home. I also decided to paint two trees symbolizing why he was in Ireland, for family. The path in the painting for Ireland moves right, towards the painting of Maine. In that painting, of Maine, I decided to paint the ocean. This is relevant to my dad’s career, being a boat mechanic. The boat I painted is in a similar position as the trees in the painting of Ireland. This shows how my dad’s career motivated his move. The color palette was also very intentional in my dad’s silhouette. I made the landscape in Ireland prominently green and in Maine prominently blue. With my dad’s silhouette being green, he blends in more in Ireland and contrasts more in Maine. That is the case in real life as well with my dad blending in Ireland and standing out in Maine.
This piece could inform me moving forward in the following ways: I really enjoyed this piece and painting landscapes. I had a lot of fun with the combination of the landscape and acrylic as well. I think I want to do more paintings in acrylic as it helps when I have compositions/subject matter that I’m not very familiar with as I am familiar with acrylics. However, I think for my next piece I might explore different mediums. I have decided the basic composition for my next piece and the subject matter/who it’s representative of. I want to do my sister because I had a sort of epiphany while sitting in history class over the composition. Dominique has helped me embrace my femininity and girly things and not be embarrassed or feel like I’m stupid for enjoying painting my nails and doing my makeup.
