Procreate on ipad, _x_?
How can I show the difference between what we view as beautiful and ugly using insects and contrast?
Started w rough sketch, then refined. Blocked in colors, blended+added detail, subject -> background
Originally, I planned on using watercolors and black ink for this piece, but I eventually landed on doing it digitally. I had tested the watercolors, but I could tell the nature of them wasn’t going to work with how much detail I wanted to achieve, and I think I would’ve preferred to get more experience with them before tackling a whole piece. Digitally, I also felt a little inexperienced, but I knew the detail I would be able to get would be all around beneficial. It was also very useful with the subject and composition I had decided on. I could easily manipulate the subject to look like it was on the folded magazine, which was very helpful in getting a realistic looking piece. I was also focusing on contrast, and the ability to tweak my colors to emphasize that contrast was invaluable. I predict I will do more digital art in the future for my sustained investigation because of how fluid it felt in this piece.
I started by focusing on contrast, thinking how I could incorporate that not only through color, but through subject. After experimenting with different thumbnails, I landed on the one I thought had the most contrast, again not just with color, but through the woman and cockroach. I then sketched several times on my ipad, ensuring I was confident in each subject before blocking in color. I sampled different brushes on my ipad until I found one I liked, and I repeated that with the brushes to blend and erase. I also started with the full cockroach being on the front cover, but after moving it around the magazine, I decided it looked better zoomed in on the cover. I plan on revising the background more with feedback as well. (Post feedback: after brainstorming, I really liked the idea of incorporating one of those 2000s-esque magazine quizzes in the piece somehow. I landed below the magazine to add to the subject, rather than detracting. I also added a pen to balance out the piece)
This piece has definitely solidified my enjoyment of using my ipad and doing digital art. I found that it was easier to work on my piece because I could take it anywhere, making a piece I enjoyed more. I think for my next piece, however, I might want to do something on paper to vary my portfolio. I also think I am going to pick rhythm/pattern for the principle of design I want to focus on. I plan on playing around with a more engaging composition, as that is what I struggled with in my most recent piece.
