Digital (dimensions?)
I wanted to make a digital piece for when I went away, as to add another piece to my investigation to get to my 8-piece goal. I used that to leverage my idea. I first thought about using a spider as my subject, but it became too difficult to make the spider look convincing for the idea I wanted, and in a crunched time frame, I decided to change my idea/subject. I then focused on the idea of performative activism and used that to create my composition and subject. I also thought it was a little ironic to draw a phone digitally, and that it fit the material and idea well.
I think I will start my praying mantis piece that I had planned prior to this one. I would definitely like to do something not-digital for this piece, as well. While planning this digital piece, I also planned another that I thought would work better with acrylics and something textured. I was inspired by Mary Benson who paints these adorable mini paintings with a border around them, and I was thinking of doing something with that and ladybugs.
My revision is mainly seen through scratching my first idea, as I realized it wouldn’t work as I wanted it to. I then practiced different thumbnail sketches, trying to understand which composition might help execute my idea the best. I landed on a vertical composition, reflecting the phone, and to place the bugs opposite of the hands for balance. I experimented with the colors in the piece, specifically with the hands. I started by using very artificial colors because I thought it could reflect the artificial actions of the subject. I decided that it might make more sense for the hands to look more realistic as to show that humans are naturally tied to insects. I practiced how to shade the hands, and took my time when taking reference photos so I could use them to accurately shade the hands and show the movement I wanted to (specifically in the right hand).
