12x16, acrylic and oil pastel on canvas
How can I depict the comforting relationship and kind values my mom has taught me through subject and color?
Did underpainting with acrylics to get the composition down. Used acrylics and oil pastel to create and add extra texture.
Reflection on Work:
To synthesize my materials, processes, and ideas, I decided to have the subject be something very comforting and soft but also something that I associated my mom with. Rabbits have the association of care and nurturing as well which I thought was perfect for this piece. I also decided on a kind of analogous color scheme, creating a sense of comfort through the whole piece. The oil pastel made the fur on the rabbits have an even cozier sensation which I loved and thought worked really well when smudged into the background. I think acrylics were the right choice for this piece as well because they were simple to use and allowed me to get the right colors and brush strokes I wanted.
In my question, I specifically noted the subject matter and color. The comfort seen from both of these things will hopefully inspire that feeling in my viewers. The composition of the bunnies leaning into the larger rabbit will also hopefully show the relationship between me and my mom that I wanted to come across.
Thinking of this piece to inform my next, I think I will use colored pencils as I want a good balance of mediums in my final portfolio. I also think I will work smaller because colored pencils take me longer than acrylics. I am, however, a little unsure on what I want my next piece to be about. I was thinking about basing it on one of my closest friends who I see in the summer. She has definitely taught me how to maintain relationships despite distance/complications.
