Special Education Students
Students who fall under the jurisdiction of the West Warwick Special Education Office shall receive report cards of academic achievement in accordance with the following:
1. Students who are mainstreamed shall earn grades in the same manner that class members earn their grades when performing generally the same educational tasks.
2. When students who are mainstreamed are working on individual projects, or when students are attending special classes, the teacher should grade the student with the following considerations:
a. Teacher expectations of the student should be realistic, given the student's particular problem, i.e. teachers should not require the student to achieve more than he or she is capable as noted by I.Q. level or particular disability.
b. Teacher expectations of the student should be decided upon by the teacher for each subject taught.
c. Teachers should grade students in each subject based on how well that student performed up to expectation, i.e. if the student is doing the best he or she can, the grade should be an "A" or equivalent.
3. Honor Roll - Any special education student should be eligible to make the honor roll if his or her grades so warrant in accordance with honor roll criteria.
4. R.I. Honor Society - Any special education student who has met all the criteria for the Rhode Island Honor Society, as set forth by constitution and policy, and who has been mainstreamed in at least three regular subjects during the Junior and Senior year, may seek membership in the Rhode Island Honor Society.
The West Warwick School Committee feels that this approach to grading special education students has two advantages, first, the student can have a positive educational experience in school, and second, the course description would adequately communicate to others the program and level of functioning the Student has achieved.
