Equipment checks

Zoom video recordings

If you want to create a video recording using Zoom you can do this from any of the Lifesize equipment in our meeting rooms. For more information on using Lifesize for Zoom see Using Zoom in our offices. If you need help with filming you can also speak to ITD.

Did you know...

You can record narration over a presentation directly within PowerPoint? You can then publish the PowerPoint to the website or share it with colleagues on SharePoint or OneDrive. It's really simple. To see how, watch this explainer video from Microsoft.

What equipment do I need?

  • A computer or laptop - Mac or PC is fine.

  • A webcam - this can be built-in to your computer or could be a linked standalone webcam. Some hosts prefer not to be visible, just manning the controls - in such an instance a webcam is not important, as your video will be switched off.

  • A microphone - again, this could be your computer's built-in mic or an external one. Some people just use the free headphones you get with an iPhone, but a noise-reducing headset with microphone is the best option.

  • A decent internet connection. The closer you are to your hub, the more reliable it will be, but a direct connection to your router via ethernet rather than relying on Wi-Fi is the absolute best option!

  • The Zoom app which you can download here.

  • Chrome web browser (recommended for setting up webinars and meetings but launching Zoom in the app to start the session is best on the day).

Checking your system capabilities

Whether using the app, setting up Zoom webinars from the dashboard or accessing Zoom via a Chrome browser tab, we recommend you work outside of any Citrix or work-based network (VDI). Use the app and the browser directly from your computer's hard drive.

We recommend you work close to your broadband hub and that too many devices are not connected to your broadband, to ensure you have optimal connectivity – so turn off the Smart TV, etc!

Downloading the app

Zoom works best on the desktop Zoom app -
download the app here

It is important to update your app when prompted to by Zoom or as part of your computer or mobile device's update protocols. Zoom regularly releases new features and these will appear in your apps after updates.

  • Check for updates under Profile on the Zoom app itself (see image)

Check your computer's audio in Zoom

When you register to attend a Zoom meeting, you are sent an email with the link (URL) to the meeting. When joining a meeting, it is best to ensure that your equipment is working properly. Your audio can come through via the computer audio from your device's microphone and speaker. When you first join the meeting, make sure you select Join Audio by computer.

As a Host or Co-Host it is recommended you check your audio and video beforehand. So open your Zoom app and, under the Home tab at the top, start a new meeting. Your Zoom window will open.

To test the computer audio

  1. Click on the arrow next to the mute icon to open the Audio options

  2. Select Test Speaker & Microphone

  3. Zoom will then test your speaker and mic, giving you instructions to help - you can select different audio output devices if you have more than one on your computer, and see which works best

  4. Once you have completed the testing satisfactorily, close the window

  5. However if you feel you want more control over volume levels then choose the Audio Settings option in that same menu (see left) and you can adjust your controls more precisely. The settings will be saved for future Zoom sessions.
