這首歌是繼「WINGS」專輯中引發巨大迴響的主打歌「血汗淚」之後，又一首以慢波特 (Moombathon) 節奏創作的慢波特電音舞曲 (Moombathon Stadium Dance Music) 。「血汗淚」相對比較悅耳，而「Not Today」則是比「FIRE」更強烈、更充滿能量的曲子。強烈的 Brass Synth Drop，以及Rap的部分搭配80-90年代的歐陸重節奏舞曲 (Euro Dance Bass) 風格的旋律，完成這首充滿防彈少年團獨特色彩的歌曲。既是歌名，且歌詞中不斷重複的「Not Today」，靈感來自「魔戒」的台詞「But it is not this day. This day we fight (但不是在今天，今天我們要誓死奮戰！)」。合唱的歌詞「無法飛翔的話就奔跑吧／Today we will survive」，靈感則是來自於金恩博士的演講詞「If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward(如果你不能飛，那就奔跑；如果跑不動，就走路；實在不能走，就用爬的。無論如何，你得不斷前進)」。
