ENGLISH-CHINESE STUDENT MAKES HIS DEBUT IN A BEAUTY PAGEANT, EMBRACING NEW EXPERIENCES

John Erwin Volante

On November 28, 2021, John Erwin Volante made his debut and participated in the "LIT Transformation: Classical Pantheon 2021," a literary transformation pageant, where he showcased his talent and intelligence and represented the BSE English-Chinese department at the University of Caloocan City.

Having the courage to step outside of the comfort zone is one of the most challenging yet fulfilling things that a person can do. After settling in academic competitions such as  quiz bees, spelling bees, and debates, John Erwin Volante finally got the courage to level up his experience beyond academics, as he joined the prestigious pageant organized by the English Department, the “LIT Transformation: Classical Pantheon 2021.”

John Erwin Volante, a first year student from the BSE English-Chinese Department, decided to broaden his horizon and overcome his fear to embrace new experiences.“After receiving lots of support and encouragement, I finally got the determination to join a pageant. As a first timer, it is not easy for me to explore my options given the fact that I have no experience regarding this thing, but I can say that after joining this pageant I have learned a lot and it feels so great to push beyond my limitations,” he said.

The LIT Transformation: Classical Pantheon 2021 is the concept of one of the most awaited pageants in the University of Caloocan City. This event was managed by officers of the English organization in celebration of English month with the theme of  "Conquering challenges through Speech, Reading, and Writing in the New Normal." It is one of the eight activities of English Week Celebration 2021. Through the representation of the participant's chosen characters and by responding to the question and answer portion in a short given time, the said event is a significant exercise that tests the participant’s creativity, speaking ability, and confidence.

The competition was exclusive only for UCC BSE- English and BSE- English-Chinese Students from all year levels. Each section is required to choose two representatives, a male and a female, who will portray one of the Greek, Roman, or Filipino Gods and Goddesses. The participants in this competition must embody and show the chosen character’s physical appearance and characteristics throughout the competition.

For John Erwin, stepping out of the comfort zone takes a lot of encouragement and critical decision making. It is hard to overcome the fear, but once done, it provides an amazing experience that leaves a life lesson that may be used as a foundation to embrace another whole new experience.
