PANDEMIC:

HAS IT REALLY ENDED?

Simon Peter Buquel

Medical Institutions all around the world warn people of the increasing number of infectious viruses wherein some are believed to be "fiercer" than the current phenomenal CoVid-19 virus.

Three years have passed since the life-harvesting virus, CoVid-19, began to spread. The plague caused huge casualties, from anxieties to deaths. Many lost their families, weren't able to continue on their jobs, and became mentally vulnerable. This risk was eventually forgotten nowadays as technology and medicine continue to advance. In fact, a lot of people have already stopped practicing the health protocols. But does the present condition prove we are already safe and sound?

Dr. Rupp, a Nebraska Medicine' licensed doctor, stated that although the original omicron variant was long gone, the evolution of the virus hasn't halted yet. New variants are continuously discovered from different countries. While some seem harmful, there are also life-threatening ones. Currently, the most dominant variant worldwide is XBB.1.5 with 87.9% cases, followed by XBB.1.9.1 with 4.06% of cases. This only signifies the CoVid pandemic hasn't ended yet. Chances are the virus becoming weaker as time goes by or a stronger variant capable of stirring the world will be born.

As the current phenomenal virus evolves, a few deadly and contagious diseases also surfaced. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that a hard to treat fungal infection caused by Candida Auris is spreading rapidly at an alarming rate. Although there are only a few thousands recorded number of patients, it has still received attention from the medical community. The Illinois Department of Public Health (DPH) have observed that some infections are resistant to all three main classes of antifungal medications. Simply speaking, it may be incurable as it continues to evolve.

Another worrying health complication that caught global attention is the Marburg Virus Disease (MVD), a rare but severe hemorrhagic fever. This is ranked one among the top ten most dangerous viruses around the world compiled by Deutsche Welle because there is no specific treatment for it. This year, the CDC reported two major outbreaks in Equatorial Guinea and Tanzania. The World Health Organization (WHO) Disease Outbreak News (DONs) also highlighted and emphasized how the MVD outbreaks happen more frequently and the possibility of it becoming a new global sensation if not solved.

These are only a few of the discovered diseases that have a high mortality rate. As medical experts suggest, even those common illnesses can be severe if they undergo evolution brought by the ever-changing world. The worsening condition of the environment also allowed viruses of varying kind and ferocity to develop and thrive. The melting of permafrost, for instance, may revive the ancient deadly harmful organisms which may start another pandemic. We haven't even recovered yet from the tragic effects of the CoVid-19 outbreak, do you think we can handle more?

May this serve as a warning to everyone not to be complacent.

"Just because the storm has calmed doesn't mean it's safe to abandon the lifeboat, for the pandemic still lingers in the depths, waiting for a chance to capsize us again."
