This downtime activity allows one to travel between nations and between cities to access the diverse locale of Theros and its many different features. To travel, one must select a City or Nation as their destination, typically a captital city, and get a rough approximation of the distance from their current location to their destination. One can gain this through either measuring it them self using the map's ruler or asking a staff member to measure it for them. Once measured, round it to the nearest hundredth. for example, a distance of 1342 Kilometers would be instead 1300 kilometers.
This number will be used to calculate two things, Downtime cost and travel expenses.
Notes:
As always, round up.
You will always roll a 1d6 to calculate any extra downtime required for situations that might occur like a broken wheel, a muddy road, or a stormy sea.
A person can travel within a nation's cities provided they are connected by land without spending Downtime.
You may not spend this downtime in installments.
Traveling on foot is by far the most time consuming ways to travel. A person could not travel to any area blocked by water (such as an island), nor can they travel past the mountains and deserts that surrounds the borders of many of the nations. As such, to travel between cities in this manner, one must take the rounded distance and divide the number by 10. for instance, a number of 1300 would become 130 days, and you would have to spend downtime days equivalent to that to travel on foot.
(approximated distance) / 10 + 1d6 = (Downtime Days Required)
If one has a swimming speed equal to their walk speed, they may cross any sea barriers between their destination.
If you are a Ranger and you have the Natural Explorer Ability, you are able to use the ability to shorten the time by taking shortcuts and foraging along the way. When you use this activity, you can reduce your Downtime Days Required an amount equal to twice your Ranger level. If another Player travels with you, they can add your Downtime reduction to their own provided they are not also a Ranger. The Downtime Days required cannot be reduced lower then half of the required time in this manner.
Alternatively, if you are a Barbarian with the path of the totem with the Elk totem as your 6th level ability, you may apply the same bonuses as a 6th level ranger to your Downtime Days reduction.
Traveling on a Mount is far more common. To travel on a mount one must own or otherwise acquire a creature that can be ridden, such as a riding horse, elephant, or Large size Dinosaur. A Warnaut or a 5th level Dragon bonded character automatically have a mount. To calculate the downtime days required for this, you must first calculate the required walking downtime days and then divide by 2 to get your riding downtime days required.
(approximated distance) / 10 = (Walking Downtime Days Required) / 2 + 1d6 = (Riding Downtime Days Required)
While realistically the differences in types of ships would mean that they would vary in speed, in the land of Theros, ship technology is equal enough that travel takes roughly the same amount of time. First, one must either own a ship of more significance then a rowboat, pay for passage, or stow away.
Pay for Passage
If you decide to pay for passage, you must calculate the Walking Downtime Days Required for the same trip, and pay that much in gold. Alternatively, you may pay your way by simply spending downtime with the crew equal to the calculated walking downtime days required for the same trip.
Stowaway
If you decide to stowaway, you must make a stealth check against a DC equal to (approximated distance) / 100. On a successful check, you arrive at your destination safely. on a failed check you may be either forced to pay, or forced to work, (Dm's Choice) in which you would spend downtime up to a maximum of the calculated walking downtime days required for the same trip.
(approximated distance) / 100 + 1d6 = (sailing Downtime Days Required)
When traveling to other regions by the miracle known as teleportation magic one has to place a downtime submission of 1 day to symbolize the character using the spell to be instantly transported to the new region.
Upon completion of your Downtime, you will be given a role in the discord server that corresponds to the nation of which you traveled to, while your prior location role will be stripped of you. You will then have access to all of that nation's role play channels, specific locations (such as a specialty Colosseum, temple, or guild), and will be able to conduct quests, bounties, or such there.
Remember to keep notes of which of your characters are where so that you can inquire as to change your roles whenever you switch between your characters. Preferably you should leave that note in your temporary retire log as well.
