Character Creation

Character Themes

Theros is a world that gathers its themes from the heroic age (i.e Greek, Spartan, Persian, and ancient Egyptian Cultures) influences, along with the early ages of empires such as Rome and Carthage. The world at this time is very small in scale. As such, we expect that the themes of your character will not conflict with the themes of the world. Certain Classes and subclasses that would conflict are up to the player to translate appropriately into this setting (such as Fighter: samurai).

Consider that there is no real equivalent of Japan, Scandinavia, or South America, at least for typically human or such races. Some races will have flavoring that is similar to such concepts and can be used similarly to an extent.

Building Your Character

  • Characters begin at level 5 with a stat array of 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 before racial or other bonuses. This is non-negotiable.

  • Starting Equipment from class and background (Do NOT roll for gold)

  • Add all Tasha class additions, and choose any variants you want. You can switch your racial ASI per Tasha's rules.

  • Additionally, characters begin with 150 days of downtime

  • Characters also start with 500 extra gold which can NOT be used to buy equipment before character acceptance.

  • All characters start with a potion of healing

  • All characters will have a Supernatural Gift (more information down below)

  • 1 piety to a single god your character follows. (see more rules about piety here)

  • When creating a character that is a spell caster you must follow the rules of level up for that class(es,) these exclude spells granted by a subclass. It is expected that a character starting at a higher level follows the proper rules for level up when it comes to spells before submitting a character. This means a class that does not prepare spells at the end of a long rest must have the following requirements below to be approved, the classes that prepare spells at the long rest and do not have requires are Artificer, Cleric, Druid, and Paladin.

    • A level 5 Bard must have a minimum of 2 first level spells and a max of 2 third level spells, with a total of 8 spells known.

    • A level 5 Ranger must have a minimum of 2 first level spells and a max of 2 second level spells with a total of 4 spells known.

    • A level 5 Sorcerer must have a minimum of 0 first level spells and a max of 2 third level spells, with a total of 6 spells known.

    • A level 5 Warlock must have a minimum of 0 first level spells and a max of 2 third level spells, with a total of 6 spells known.

    • A level 5 Wizard must have a minimum of 8 first level spells and a max of 2 third level with a total of 14 known spells from the wizard.

Supernatural Gifts

Most heroes of Theros have some kind of supernatural aid to help them achieve their goals. Often this aid comes from the gods, but some heroes might find their support from other beings, such as the sphinx Medomai, an oracle like Atris or Kydele, or a repository of mystical knowledge. Some heroes are born with supernatural power or born as a result of supernatural events.

A character in Theros and by extension Waking Myths begins with one supernatural gift chosen from either the Supernatural Gift section within the Mythic Odyssey of Theros sourcebook or one Feat from any approved sourcebooks or Miscellaneous Homebrew.

Work with a Game Master to decide where your character’s gift came from. Is it tied to the god you serve? Was it the result of a fateful encounter with a sphinx or an oracle? Does it indicate the nature of your birth? Each gift’s description also includes a table to spark your imagination as you think about your character’s gift.

Some of these Supernatural Gifts will scale with level or Piety. While you may alternatively choose a feat for your supernatural Gift, you cannot choose a supernatural Gift instead of a Feat when you are allowed an ASI by your class. Supernatural Gifts may however be given out as quest rewards. For your information, we will Also be tracking Piety.

If you Chose the Iconoclast Gift, you cannot gain benefits from the Piety System

Changed, Retired, or Dead Characters

Changing your Character

We don't allow people to change their character in many ways after they've already been approved, but there are a few ways to change the mechanics of your character without resorting to retiring them. If your character has not been in combat, you can change Any aspect of your character aside from race for free by resubmitting the character for approval. After you've been in combat, you can change certain aspects of your character with the Tasha's aspects by spending Downtime Days.

  • All Tasha's "Versatility" Options require you to spend 10 DT days.

  • In order to Change your Subclass you must spend a DT amount of 5+5 x Character Level.

Dead or Permanently Retired Characters

Players whose last character died or retires can create their new character at one level below their current level at the lowest XP for that level. No new character can be beyond level 10 by this rule.

Additionally, if the new character is beyond level 5, they instead start with gold equal to 100 times their last character's level, and downtime equal to 150 + 10 x last character's level.

2 Characters

  • you are allowed to have two characters at any one time provided you have reached level 15 with mee6 and have been part of the server for 30 days when you become a Citizen of Celladore. When you make a new character in this manner, you start your new character as if it was your only character (i.e a level 5 character).

  • When you retire a character, its bonuses go immediately to your next character rather then your remaining character and cannot be stored for later. Your two characters can not interact in any way. such as being part of the same guild or sharing resources. Only one character can be in an adventure, hunt, or combat encounter at a time, while the other may only be used for role play encounters. you can role play with both characters at any time.

Other Creation Rules

  • Characters cannot be below the age of maturity for their race. This is to avoid many issues relating to Child Characters both in World and Out of Character.

  • Backstories may not include the Underdark.

  • Most other planes are not their own things, and are usually part of either the underworld, or Nyx.

  • Certain races may have started extra-planar. Satyrs from the Feywild or Genasi from an elemental plane should speak with a GM about their history, as well as any other character who comes from a different plane.

  • We do not allow customized backgrounds. If you want to use a custom background it must be submitted as if it was any other homebrew material.

  • Multiclass characters must follow the minimum stat requirements to be able to multiclass.
