Spero is a company that is dedicated to supporting BYU-Pathway students with a variety of AI tools. They have developed this tool to help students practice English speaking so that you can be better prepared for future job opportunities. As part of this program, you are among the first students to use the tool and are a vital piece to making it better. As with any AI, the more it is used, the smarter it gets. This partnership helps BYU-Pathway students practice English speaking, while also helping Spero refine their AI tools which will further help students. We are excited for you to use this tool! Please follow the instructions below to access the tool. Please also read the usage tips before you access it for the first time.
Only students from this Tier 1 pilot program can access the tool so you MUST use your byupathway.edu email address to login
Right now, the password is the same for everyone so just use 1234 for the password
Once you login, you will see a box that says "Select Conversation". Click on the black "Start a Conversation" button to start a call.
Once it is connected, you will hear an AI voice begin speaking to you. Go ahead and speak back to the AI and have a back and forth conversation for as long as you want.
When you are done with the conversation, hit the red "hang-up" button to end the call.
Once the call is over, the AI will produce feedback on your conversation, as well as some practice scores. Review the feedback and make note of things to work on.
It may take a few minutes for the feedback to generate.
This tool is available to you at any time to use. It is an opportunity for you to practice speaking English and receive feedback. The more you use it, the better the tool will get at giving you more specific feedback.
Be patient with the tool. You may notice some bugs as you use the tool, but keep trying as the more it is used the smarter it will get! There will be updates to the tool each week based on your usage and feedback.
A call should be AT LEAST 3 minutes long to generate feedback. The longer the calls are, the better the feedback will be. Try for about 10-15 minutes calls at a time, or longer if needed. Keep in mind that the longer the call is, the longer it will take to generate feedback.
Do not give one or two word answers to the questions. Make sure that your answers are complete and try to talk for as long as you can. This will help the AI generate better feedback.
A portion of all calls are reviewed by human quality assurance analysts. Keep this in mind when sharing personal information with the tool.
If you need time to think about your response, you can tell the AI "Give me a second to think about this" and it will give you more time before responding.
Thank you for helping us test this tool! We hope you find it helpful and enjoyable.
