Sixth Year Prom to change venue to assembly hall

Autumn 2023 ∙ Ena Saracevic

The much-anticipated sixth year prom will have a change of scenery in the coming year, with the school’s own hall to be its new home.

At a recent assembly, it was decided that the prom will take place within the same hall students sit in for assemblies and exams.

For several years the prom has been hosted at the Mansefield Hotel. A highly rated venue which is well-known within the local community, the hotel for prom has been a focal point of the S6 experience.

This year, the school has only approved of their own premises as the location for prom, with their reasoning being centred around the cost of the event.

The provisional cost of the Mansefield as a venue, excluding music, would be £60. In previous years, the total cost of a ticket has been around £70 each.

At the meeting, Mr Scott announced that the students would be able to have a ‘blank cheque’ for making the prom at school perfect for the pupils. He said that they would be able to do anything that they’d like: including having free reign over food choices, music and decorations.

By pursuing this, the tickets are set to be much cheaper at an outstanding £10 to £15. A vote across the year group decided, by a large margin, that the majority wanted prom to be in the assembly hall.

Members of the Senior Leadership Team have said that they hope for this to be the launch of prom happening at the school for many years to come.

The leaders of this year’s social committee, Ellie Milne and Georgia Gentleman, are ensuring that prom will be enjoyable for all, regardless of the location.

Ellie said: “What I, and many people, want from prom is for everyone to have a nice last night together.

“At my old school we had a prom every year and it was so much fun. You get to dance with people you normally don’t speak to. It’s a chance to feel like a princess for the night.”
