North of Scotland Cup – Can we go all the way?

Autumn 2023 ∙ Ben Rankin

After a rather impressive display, Elgin Academy’s under 15 girls’ football team have advanced to the quarter finals of the North of Scotland Cup. Their first-round game was at home versus a well drilled Culloden Academy side who had made the short journey down the A96 to play. It was a close and tense affair until Natalie Macaulay of S3 broke the deadlock with her goal in the middle of the second half. Unfortunately, right after the half time break, the score was levelled by the Culloden forward. But not to worry for the home crowd as S2 student Alex Galloway took back the lead to make it 2-1 as the final score advancing to the quarter finals. Coach Miss Turnbull said, “It was a great display of hard work and team play and I am so proud of the girls”. They travel to Turriff at the start of December. They continue to train on the Astro after school on a Monday.

For the under 15 boys, it is their first game of the season. They make the trek to Fraserburgh on the 10th of November in the first round of the North of Scotland Cup. The PE department's newest recruit, Mr Watson is away on his first venture with an Elgin Academy sports team, he says “It is an exciting opportunity, and I can’t wait to see what the team can do, and fingers crossed we are into the next round.” Mr Ord takes their football training on a Wednesday after school on the Astro.

Mr Baker took the senior boys’ team to Gordonstoun for a friendly game in preparation for their North of Scotland Cup’s first round. It was a scintillating and devastating display as they thrashed the private school 4-0. A performance that the King would not have liked to witness from his former schools’ team. Goals from the October friendly match came from Daniel Fraser, who has recently left school, Daniel Hanover and two fantastic finishes from Hamish Fraser who is in his final year of school. Can this be the perfect way to end off his illustrious school football career with a North of Scotland Cup victory? They travel away to Thurso in the next couple of weeks in their pursuit of top spot.
