Using the architectural principles identified in the previous project, we had to explore and conceptualise meaning and poetics behind the application of those principles. Experimenting with the form and space, our goal was to design a Tropical Rainforest Discovery Platform within 125m3.
This was another group project, we started off with creating the site which our discovery platform will be built on. We discussed and settled on having our building be on a hill, not too tall, to be on the same height as the treeline below but also have elevation to bring out the discovery aspect.
After weeks of sketches and mock models, we developed our design into a progressive spatial experience; a journey of exploration through light and shadow. Just like Hideout Horizon, through a central plan and lines, we allow the user to observe through enclosed, semi-enclosed and open spaces with a spiral circulation which further emphasises on the exploration aspect by leading our user through our building, '无限' like an infinite loop.
The main obstacle of the project was deciding and designing with the architectural principle from Hideout Horizon. We struggled to pinpoint what principle we wanted to use for this project and kept switching back and forth between different ones.
But one thing I've definitely learnt from this project is the flexibility of architecture, and there is no fixed formula in designing a building, things can change even at the last minute before submission. I should be less rigid when experimenting and conceptualising, allowing the design process to take my idea into something wilder and shape the poetics around that instead of having a fixed narrative or design direction.
